Core Experiences

Each academic year is structured into twelve 4-week rotations, plus a 4-week “FM Breakout” block over the holidays. This schedule ensures that every resident receives one week of vacation during the special break-out period. Throughout training, each resident maintains a panel of patients in their outpatient continuity clinic. These clinics provide a diverse experience that includes chronic disease management, acute care, pediatrics, office procedures, and obstetrics/gynecology. In the second and third years, residents also assume responsibility for inpatient care at Riverside Post-Acute and in a long-term care nursing facility.

  • FMC is our home, and primary clinical site for outpatient family medicine, offering residents a rich and supportive environment to grow as physicians. Starting on day one, each resident begins to build their continuity panel with clinic at least ½ day per week which expands with their level of training. Over three years, residents build meaningful, long-term relationships with their patients while also collaborating with their resident team to provide comprehensive care. Purpose built for our resident's’ education, our two floor clinic serves patients of all ages, across multiple payor sources. Residents will learn to manage variety of primary care concerns including chronic diseases, acute illness, preventative medicine. Additionally, residents perform in-office procedures including skin biopsies, cryotherapy, incision & drainage, wound care, joint aspirations & injections, colposcopies, endometrial biopsies, and others.

Our clinic provides the variety, autonomy, and mentorship that prepare residents to thrive as full spectrum family physicians ensuring they graduate with the skills and confidence to provide comprehensive primary care anywhere their career takes them.

  • Inpatient Medicine

Our Inpatient Medicine service offers residents the opportunity to care for a diverse mix of patients, including continuity clinic patients and unassigned admissions from the Emergency Department. The team consists of a faculty attending who supports a third year medicine chief, a third year academic chief, a second year resident, and two first year residents. While our first year residents are primarily responsible for admissions day-to-day patient care, they always work alongside a senior resident who provides guidance, support, and teaching. This structure ensure a balance of autonomy and supervision, fostering a graduated, progressive growth of clinical responsibilities.

The team also extends their care into the post-discharge setting through the FMC Safe Recovery After Hospitalization (SaRAH) clinic, where inpatients are ensured a safe transition to ongoing outpatient care with collaboration from clinic care coordinators. This continuity of care re-emphasizes the importance of family medicine’s role in caring for patients across all clinical settings.

    Night Float

Our night float system is designed to provide robust inpatient training while protecting resident wellness. Each team is composed of a first-year and second year resident, with a third year resident available overnight for additional support. The team manages inpatients, responds to floor calls, and admits new patients, all without 24-hour shifts. This model ensures excellent clinical exposure while maintaining a sustainable work-life balance.

  • Obstetrics

Our residents receive truly immersive training in obstetrics at St. Vincent’s Southside, just 15 minutes from Riverside. Each team pairs a first year and a third year resident under the direct supervision of FM-OB faculty, ensuring both strong mentorship and progressive independence. Residents gain hands-on experience in every aspect of maternity care, including OB triage, antenatal care, normal and operative vaginal deliveries, laceration repair, cesarean deliveries, and routine postpartum care.

From the start of residency, interns rotate between inpatient obstetrics and our dedicated FMC OB clinic, caring for both pre- and postnatal patients. Weekly OB didactics reinforce clinical learning and provide a solid foundation in family-centered maternity care.

By the third year, residents not only refine their obstetrics skills on the inpatient service but also broaden their leadership skills by supervising interns in the pediatric outpatient setting. Across all three years, residents care for their own continuity patients through prenatal, delivery, and postpartum experiences, preparing them to practice full-spectrum family medicine.

Second year residents also complete two weeks of OB Night Float, managing triage, labor, and antenatal admissions. With a 2+2 split across the Emergency Medicine rotation and no 24-hour shifts, this model maximizes learning while supporting resident wellness.

    Gynecology

Our program emphasizes comprehensive women’s health training that extends beyond obstetrics. During the second year, residents gain extensive exposure to outpatient gynecology, including procedures such as colposcopy, endometrial biopsy, and IUD insertion. These experiences occur in the FMC office, private practices, and community clinics, providing a wide range of practice settings.

Residents also participate in inpatient and outpatient gynecology consults, manage gynecologic admissions and assist in surgical cases. By the end of training, residents graduate confident in their ability to provide a broad scope of women’s health care from preventive services to complex inpatient management.

  • Outpatient Pediatrics

From the very first year, residents gain hands-on experience in pediatric outpatient care, seeing newborns, well-child visits, and acutely ill children. Residents are supervised by a senior resident and our dedicated pediatrician, ensuring both mentorship and progressive skill-building.

Training extends beyond the clinic: residents attend weekly Grand Rounds and teaching rounds at Wolfson Children’s Hospital, and participate in Operation HERO, an innovative educational partnership with a nearby K–8 school. These experiences broaden exposure to pediatric health in both clinical and community settings.

    Inpatient Pediatrics

During the first year, residents rotate at Wolfson Children’s Hospital, the only dedicated children’s hospital in Northeast Florida. A unique partnership with their pediatric residency, family medicine residents across multiple programs work together as an inpatient team. The special FM-Peds inpatient team is led by a pediatric senior resident and supervised by pediatric hospitalist attendings. Our residents work closely with our pediatric counterparts and subspecialists, caring for children with both common and complex conditions. The variety of pathology, depth of specialty exposure, and team-based learning make this an invaluable part of training. In the PGY2 year, residents expand their pediatric experience further with a four week Pediatric Emergency Medicine rotation in Wolfson’s busy emergency department.

    Newborn Nursery

First year residents also complete a concentrated rotation in the newborn nursery and NICU at St. Vincent’s Southside. Here, they gain experience in newborn assessment, routine care, and participate in newborn resuscitations.

At the start of residency, all interns complete NALS/NRP certification, and throughout the year they continue to strengthen their neonatal skills while working alongside neonatologists. This foundation ensures our graduates are confident and capable in caring for newborns, a vital aspect of family medicine.
