Our Philosophy
At St. Vincent's Family Medicine Residency Program, we are committed to delivering an individualized education experience for each resident’s professional goals while providing a comprehensive, full spectrum, family medicine experience. Our residents graduate as skilled physician-leaders, equipped to care for patients and families of all ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, and cultural traditions. Established in 1972, our three-year program has a long legacy of excellence and welcomes a diverse class of 12 residents each year. We are fully accredited by the ACGME Family Medicine Residency Review Committee and, since 2004, have proudly held Osteopathic Recognition accreditation, reflecting our commitment to evidence-based, holistic, patient-centered care.
Part of a Leading Healthcare System
The St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Residency Program is part of Ascension St. Vincent’s, which was founded by the Daughters of Charity in 1916, which is the nation’s largest nonprofit Catholic health system. Today Ascension St. Vincent’s consists of four hospitals (Riverside, Southside, Clay County, and St. Johns County), urgent care centers, ambulatory centers and Ascension Medical Group with primary care and specialty care practices.
A Focus on Comprehensive Care
The residency emphasizes patient continuity and full-spectrum care, fostering critical clinical skills and decision-making abilities. Embracing evidence-based medicine, we continuously tailor our curriculum to include the most up-to-date guidelines, treatment plans, and preventative health recommendations.
Resident and Faculty Perspective
Individualized Learning Plans, Fellowship, and Careers
In their first year, residents work with their faculty advisors to determine an Individualized Learning Plan based on their clinical interests and career goals. The ILP supports the resident in tailoring their learning experience to their individual interests, structuring their electives during the three years, and supporting the resident's personal and professional development. Many of our residents pursue fellowship opportunities and our program has a strong track record of residents matching with their first-choice positions in Women’s Health/Obstetrics, Sports Medicine, Sleep Medicine, Academic Medicine, Geriatrics, and Hospice & Palliative Medicine. Residents who desire to transition directly into practice are employed in all fields of family medicine and all across the country. Graduates go on to become outpatient clinicians, hospitalists, direct primary care physicians, ER/urgent care clinicians, and more.
Expert Faculty and Teachers
Our faculty are specialists in primary care and passionate educators. We have a diverse team of core faculty who are experts spanning family medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, clinical psychology, lifestyle medicine, sports medicine, and osteopathic medicine. Collectively, they bring over 100 years of teaching experience, many of whom are proud graduates of our program. Resident education is further enriched by our adjunct faculty, who provide additional specialized training in geriatrics, general surgery, OB-Gyn, clinical pharmacy, and more. Together, our collaborative faculty network ensures that residents receive a truly comprehensive, full spectrum education that prepares them for success in any field of family medicine.
